International Internships for Indigenous Youth

Nepal%2B2019.jpg

Take part in an unforgettable experience. Live and work overseas on a three-month internship.

As an intern you will:

Build your resume and gain transferable skills for your future careers.

Grow a deeper understanding of the world, cultures, and global issues.

Reflect on your personal values and what’s most important to you.

The International Internships for Indigenous Youth program offers Indigenous youth a chance to step outside their comfort zones and learn first-hand what it means to be an active global citizen. The program is open to all Indigenous youth aged 18-35 from across Canada to complete three-month internships in the Global South. Internship placements are currently hosted in Kenya, Nepal, Myanmar and Cambodia. The program is an initiative of the Northern Council for Global Cooperation (NCGC) and the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC).

How the program works

Twenty successful youth applicants travel in groups to spend four months with a host organization. Interns’ work supports the Sustainable Development Goals in areas such as environmental conservation, community development, youth engagement, health and wellness, or poverty reduction. Interns will learn first-hand about international development issues while gaining skills and experience as active global citizens.

Youth will participate in one week of pre-departure training to prepare for their time overseas. After the internship ends, the group returns to Canada for a multi-day debrief and public engagement training to share their stories with their home communities.

Funding

The majority of the program costs are funded - including airfare, transportation costs, a monthly allowance for living expenses and costs associated with pre-departure and post-internship training.

The internship program is funded by Global Affairs Canada as part of the International Aboriginal Youth Internships (IAYI) initiative.

What’s the internship like?

“Four months ago, I was accepted for an internship that would change my life forever. I moved across the world from my home town of Teslin, Yukon to Phom Penh, Cambodia - from 300 people to 3 million people. I’ve learned so much about the world and many issues we all face on a global scale. I learned the power we have to make a difference when we work together in unity.”

- Autum Jules, Year 1 Intern
