Yukon Indigenous youth selected for international internship
Whitehorse, YK- Five Indigenous youth from across the territory have been chosen from a national competition to participate in a four-month overseas internship program. More information about the program can be found at https://www.acic-caci.org/acic-internships.
Jesse Hudson (25 years od) from Whitehorse, Taneshia Jules (21 years old) from Teslin, Samantha McKim (24 years old) from Whitehorse, Jessica Olson (22 years old) from Ross River, and Nikita Sawrenko-Bailey (22 years old) from Whitehorse, are among 20 Indigenous youth from across Canada who have been selected for this opportunity to work and live overseas with a non-profit organization. This includes organizations in Costa Rica, Kenya, Guyana, Myanmar, and Nepal.
The program is a partnership between the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation, the Northern Council for Global Cooperation, BYTE Empowering Youth, the Confederation of Mainland Mi’kmaq, the Native Council of PEI and GPI Atlantic.
Hudson, part of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, and Jules, part of the Teslin Tlingit Council First Nations, will travel to Nepal for their internship with Rural Institute for Community Development. They will provide support for programs related to women and children’s access to health and education.
McKim, a member of the Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in, will go to Kenya to intern with the Rift Valley Resource Centre and Run for Life. She will be assisting with programs related to clean water and environmental conservation, as well as community sustainability.
Olson, part of the Ross River First Nations, will be interning for the Volunteer Youth Corps Inc in Guyana, working on various projects to help improve quality of life for children and youth.
Sawrenko-Bailey, part of the Liard First Nation, is going to Myanmar for her internship with the Thai Volunteer Service and the Kalyana Mitta Development Fund. She will be facilitating projects related to women and youth’s empowerment in the country.
The interns will meet in Ottawa for pre-departure training in August, before departing for their internships.
