Gender Equality Symposium to be hosted by regional council for international cooperation

Gender Equality Conference brings together activists and international speakers

St. John’s, NL: The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC) is hosting its annual symposium in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador October 3rd and 4th. Full details can be found here: https://www.acicsymposium.org.

The Symposium, titled Gender Equality: The Power of Storytelling to Build Relationships and Collaboration, will take place at the Fluvarium, 5 Nagles Pl, St. John's. It will feature a keynote address the evening of Thursday, October 3rd, and two panel discussions as well as four capacity-building workshops Friday, Oct. 4th.

The keynote address will be provided by Sister Lissy Chacko. Lissy has a vast experience of working with different groups of people over the years: practicing family law in the courts and under the State Women’s Commission in Kerala, serving as a member on the Juvenile Justice Board for four4 years, and joining the religious life with the Good Shepherd Sisters Bangalore in 1990. Lissy has built strong relationships with government agencies and non-governmental organizations to assist vulnerable people through implementations of programs in the local communities.

The panel discussions are titled The Power of Storytelling (morning Oct. 4) and Successful Relationships and Collaboration (afternoon Oct. 4).

The panels feature speakers Carol-Lynne D'Arcangelis, Memorial University gender studies professor; Kaberi Debnath, Executive Director with the Multicultural Women’s Organization NL; Dane Woodland, transgender activist; Deanne Howlett, Program Manager, YWCA St. John's; Jose Rivera, Executive Director, Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Council (RIAC); and others to be confirmed.

ACIC is a coalition of over 60 individuals, organizations, and institutions working in the Atlantic region, which are committed to achieving global sustainability in a peaceful and healthy environment, with social justice, human dignity, and participation for all.
